MEN’S HEALTH & TESTOSTERONE PROGRAM

Improve your overall health!

It’s estimated that 5-10% of middle-aged men suffer from functionally low testosterone. This rate is higher in those with obesity or diabetes. Symptoms are often vague and include brain fog, sexual dysfunction, muscle loss, fatigue and loss of bone strength. Testosterone replacement with specific lifestyle changes can help!

I have symptoms of low testosterone and want to be assessed. How do I start?

Low testosterone is a medical condition, and diagnosis is based on symptoms, lab tests and physical exam findings. The consultation with a Urologist is an OHIP-covered service. A referral is required. You can ask your healthcare provider to visit our website to obtain referral information (Refer a Patient section) - we will be happy to see you in an efficient manner!

We make it easy to refer - fax, eReferral, email or online form! We ask that referrals be accompanied by a minimum morning total testosterone, CBC and thyroid function test.

What should I expect in my first couple of visits?

After an OHIP-covered consultation with a Urologist to review your initial blood work, perform a physical exam and review your symptoms, further blood work or diagnostic tests may be required.  If it is determined that you have functionally low testosterone, patients will have a discussion with the Urologist on the risks and benefits of appropriate treatment options. This includes pharmaceutical options of injections, gels, oral pills or nasal sprays in addition to important lifestyle habits.

How is my treatment monitored?

Our team follows the Canadian Urology Association guidelines on testosterone monitoring. This includes getting your blood work and symptoms checked at three months, six months and one year after starting pharmaceutical treatment.

Is there a benefit or risk to my cardiac health by treating low testosterone?

Older men with untreated low testosterone have an increased risk of death, cardiovascular disease and overall disability. Men with low testosterone are more at risk of developing significant coronary artery disease. While men may notice the symptoms of low testosterone, such as fatigue and sexual dysfunction, they may not yet appreciate the symptoms of their occult coronary artery disease.

There are ongoing studies examining whether those with cardiovascular disease will benefit from testosterone replacement. The US Society for Endocrinology 2021 guidelines for testosterone replacement state that doctors "are advised to consider cardiovascular risk in men before initiating testosterone treatment," and the Canadian Urological Association (CAU) guidelines state 'an individualized risk-benefit assessment is prudent." The Canadian Men's Health Guidelines on Testosterone replacement state that "testosterone replacement is appropriate for men with low testosterone who have or are at risk of cardiovascular disease."

Patients with cardiovascular risk factors can be referred to our team of cardiologists for a cardiovascular health assessment and an individualized discussion. This is a fully OHIP-covered service.

Can testosterone treatment worsen hair loss?

As many men know - male pattern hair loss is associated with increased levels of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) - a hormone derived from testosterone. DHT can contribute to the miniaturization of hair follicles in individuals genetically predisposed to male pattern baldness. It's important to note that not all individuals who undergo testosterone therapy will experience hair loss, as genetics and individual variations play a significant role. Some individuals may be more susceptible to DHT-induced hair loss, while others may not experience significant hair thinning or balding.

To mitigate the potential impact of DHT on hair loss, individuals undergoing testosterone therapy can explore various strategies. We offer private consultations with board-certified dermatologists to discuss hair loss prevention using advanced treatments such as platelet-rich plasma micro-injections. If undergoing testosterone replacement, we recommend an appointment with our dermatologist to discuss hair loss prevention and PRP treatment. This is a non-OHIP service (private fee), so a referral to our dermatologist is not required.

Is taking testosterone going to make me healthy?

While testosterone replacement can improve metabolic, bone, sexual and mental health, it must be taken in conjunction with proper diet and exercise to reach maximum effectiveness.
