UROLOGY

Why do I need a Urologist?

Urologists are specialists in the urinary tract and male reproductive system. They are surgically trained physicians who have completed at least five years of intensive urology residency in Canada and/or the United States. Many urologic conditions have medical treatments, including erectile dysfunction, urinary tract infections, bladder dysfunction, and prostate enlargement, to name a few. When surgery is an option, our urologists can perform the procedure in our clinic, do the procedure in a hospital, or refer you to a colleague in a large specialized centre if required.

What are the common reasons someone sees a Urologist?

Some of the most common presentations to a urologist include difficulties with urination, sexual dysfunction, testicular pain and hematuria (blood in the urine). If you are unsure if your issue requires a urology specialist, please speak with your family doctor.

Is there a cost to seeing a urologist at Unify Health?

Most issues specifically related to your health are covered by OHIP and have no extra fees associated. Some cosmetic issues or non-OHIP-covered services (like circumcision) have fees associated with them.

I am having issues getting and/or keeping an erection. Do I need Viagra?

Erectile dysfunction is a complex and multifaceted issue. It could be related to mood, sleep, cardiovascular fitness, anatomical and/or hormonal issues. While medications may help some men, those with erectile dysfunction should see their family physician and determine if they need a urology visit to go through their issues. If the urologist suspects a cardiovascular, mood or hormonal component related to the dysfunction, they may refer you to an additional specialist within the Unify clinic who can help. Our Men’s Health program at Unify is truly unique in its multi-centered approach involving a host of medical specialists and allied health team members.

What is a vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a straightforward, 30-minute procedure that is used as a birth control method for men. While possibly reversible, vasectomy is intended to be a permanent form of contraception. We do not recommend using vasectomy unless you are sure you do not want the ability to biologically father children. If you would like more information about vasectomy, click here or e-mail us at booking@unifyhealth.ca.

Am I awake during a vasectomy?

Most vasectomies are done with the patient awake, under local anesthesia. If you decline local anesthesia or if the surgeon believes that local anesthesia with or without oral sedation will not be adequate for a particular patient, then vasectomy may be performed with intravenous sedation within our clinic.
