SPORTS AND EXERCISE MEDICINE
What is Sports Medicine?
Sports Medicine is a specialized field focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and disorders related to physical activity. At Unify Health, our Sports Medicine physicians work with athletes and active individuals of all ages to restore function, reduce pain, and enhance performance—whether you're managing a chronic joint issue or recovering from an injury.
Our team uses the latest evidence-based interventions, including ultrasound-guided injections and regenerative therapies, to help you return to the activities you love.
What are common reasons to see a Sports Medicine physician at our clinic?
Some of the most common conditions and injuries we treat include:
Osteoarthritis of the knee, shoulder, or hip
Tendinopathies (e.g., tennis elbow, Achilles tendinosis)
Rotator cuff and shoulder impingement syndromes
Meniscal or labral injuries
Patellofemoral pain syndrome
Plantar fasciitis
Iliotibial (IT) band syndrome
Greater trochanteric pain syndrome
Bursitis
Muscle strains and ligament sprains
In addition to diagnostic evaluation and conservative management, our physicians provide ultrasound-guided injections where appropriate.
What types of injections are available?
We offer a range of injectable therapies designed to reduce pain and inflammation and support tissue repair. These include:
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Injections
Used to treat osteoarthritis, particularly of the knee. HA acts as a lubricant and shock absorber in the joint, helping to restore mobility and reduce pain.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections
A regenerative option that uses your own platelets to accelerate healing of tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints. PRP is particularly useful for chronic tendinopathies and early degenerative joint disease.
Corticosteroid Injections
Effective for reducing acute inflammation and managing pain in certain soft tissue and joint conditions.
Most injections are performed under ultrasound guidance to ensure precision and optimal outcomes.
Is there a cost associated with these treatments?
While consultations and medically necessary evaluations by our Sports Medicine specialists are covered by OHIP with a valid referral, some injection therapies such as hyaluronic acid and PRP are not covered and are associated with a private fee. Our team will review your treatment options and clearly outline any associated costs before proceeding.
I want to see a Sports Medicine physician at Unify Health. How can I make an appointment?
If you're experiencing joint or soft tissue pain and would like to be assessed for a possible injection or treatment plan:
Ask your family doctor or nurse practitioner to send a referral to Unify Health.
Once received, our team will arrange your consultation promptly.
If you're interested specifically in PRP or hyaluronic acid injections, you may contact us directly at booking@unifyhealth.ca for general information, but a referral is still required for consultation.
